Monday Bites~ Kid’s Holiday Cookie Decorating Party

A few weeks ago my sister hosted a holiday cookie decorating party for my niece and her friends Ilse and Nairobi. The super aunt that I am, I had to be apart of the festivities. My cookie decorating level is slightly advanced for 2-3 years, so I gave the girls blank cookies, royal icing, sprinkles and let them go to town!

Focused and intense cookie decorating happening.

That’s my niece Ms. Violet in the middle.

After decorating the cookies I knew the girls would want to eat them right away without letting them dry. The planner I am was prepared with pre-decorated cookies.

Enjoying the tastiness of TMB.

In the Bakery~ Preserving, Mounting and Framing Cookies

I want to find a way to keep the Barbie sized cookies we made for Z!NK magazine May 2011 design issue.  I came up with the idea of preserving, mounting and displaying cookies in a shadow box.  Here are some basic instructions:

First, let the cookies dry out for a month to get rid of as much oil as possible.  Then coat the front and back of the cookies with a few layers of matte spray varnish.

After the cookies have completely dried sprayed the back of the cookies with a hi-tack spray adhesive and mounted the cookies to your background.  Dry flat for 24 hours.  Place in shadow box and hang for display.

Final Product!

Editor’s Thoughts~ Studio Visit with Nina Chanel Abney

Last week I paid a visit to Nina Chanel Abney’s new art studio. I spent my time there taking about business, picking her head about her creative process, reminiscing about graduate school, and the random things in her studio like a piano (which I did not know she played) and an Atari.
Nina is currently working on a new body of work for a solo show taking place later this year. Although I could not take pictures of her artwork in progress I took a few of her studio.

Within the next few weeks I plan on inviting Nina to my studio so she can see where the magic happens and make some cookies.

Monday Bites~ My Little Baker in Training

This weekend I watched my niece Ms. Violet  while my sister was out of town.  I planned out everything.  What we were going to do from playing in the park to going to the Children’s Museum of Art. But baking by far was her favorite activity!

Flouring the surface and prepping the cookie dough to be rolled out.

Rolling out the dough and cutting out bunnies, flowers and baby chicks.

Our finished product!

This was a great bonding experience for us.  There is nothing better that to show someone you love something that means so much to you.  Growing up my mom cooked every meal and baked at least once a week.  It’s those memories it the kitchen that have stuck with me over the years.

Next time I will show Ms. Violet how to ice cookies!
